How to Start a Low-Waste Routine

Going low-waste doesn’t have to mean changing everything overnight, it’s about making choices you can actually stick with. The easiest way to start is with the things you use every day.

1. Replace only when something runs out
Don’t throw away what you already have just to switch to a “better” version. Use it up first. When it’s finished, choose a lower-waste alternative. This way, you save money, avoid waste and make the swap feel natural.

2. Start with one part of your routine
Pick one area, like your bathroom, kitchen or grocery trips and focus on that first. In the bathroom, it can be switching to a lotion bar instead of a plastic pump bottle or using a bamboo comb instead of a plastic one.

3. Choose natural materials
Whenever you can, go for items made from materials that are reusable, biodegradable, or recyclable. Glass, aluminium, paper, and plant-based fibres are easier to keep in use or return to the earth.

4. Take care of what you have
The longer something lasts, the less you need to replace it. Wash reusable pads properly so they stay soft. Keep bamboo combs dry between uses. Store lotion bars in tins so they travel well and last longer.

5. Make it part of your everyday
Keep your reusable produce bags in your shopping tote. Store your lotion bar by the sink so you remember to use it. Leave your reusable makeup remover pads near your mirror. The easier it is to reach, the more likely you’ll use it.

Starting small means it feels less like a chore and more like a habit. Over time, these swaps add up and that’s how real change happens.
